Around the year 500, the Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, “change is the only constant in life” - and he was right! Since the beginning of time, we have seen change in every single aspect of life. From language and communication, to transportation and engineering, things are progressing and changing at such a rapid rate. The past 150 years have seen the creation of automobiles, electricity, the internet and Doritos - all essential elements of our everyday lives. And even now, in the past handful of years, it seems that things are changing even more rapidly. Instead of going out for dinner and building community with friends and family, we can now choose to order food from our phone and have a stranger deliver it to our doorstep. Instead of absolute truth, some people believe that truth can be whatever you want it to be on any given day.
With everything changing so quickly, how do we, as Christians, not get swept up in the in the rushing waters of the world? I find comfort in the words of a hymn penned in 1923 by Thomas Chisholm:
Great is Thy faithfulness
O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be
This hymn shares of the unchanging nature of our God. He doesn’t change. His compassion doesn’t fail. As He has always been, He has forever been. When life around us is changing faster than we can comprehend, the nature of our God will always be the same. Any Scripture that we read about the nature and character of God is true in the past, the present and the future.
His unfailing love can never be shaken. Isaiah 54:10
He will always care for us. I Peter 5:7
He will always be patient with us. 2 Peter 3:9
God can never, and will never lie. Numbers 23:19
He is patient, righteous and compassionate. Psalm 116:5
Hebrews 13:8 tells us that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His mercy, grace and compassion will never change. He won’t change his mind tomorrow and decide not to love us. He won’t be double minded and choose not to be our Healer or Provider next year. At the end of time, he will still be faithful and true.
Whatever change you find yourself in the midst of, know that our Saviour will never change. If you are afraid of the rapid change in our society and world today, hold on to our unchanging Father. Know that in times of uncertainty and upheaval, He is the same yesterday, today and forever and will not let you down.
